Orienteering in the Pont Valley
David Marrs has been working closely with N.A.T.O orienteering group and with additional funding we have now completed the 4 orienteering courses in the valley. These range from 4-11 miles and varying difficulty levels.
The control points have all been hand made by David from British Elm, fixed to marked sections of the course by dedicated members of PVN and have a unique code for users to record as they find them.
Below is the leaflet to go along with the orienteering course including a map to follow. All courses will start from Dipton Community Centre and we are in the process of arranging some publicity events over the next few months. These will introduce people to the courses including local schools and organisations and we hope to highlight the enjoyment that can be had with orienteering in our valley.
If you are interested in coming along to see for yourself or join in with our events please watch out for future dates or contact David Marrs via the website.
Further information can also be found with NATO:- http://www.newcastleorienteering.org.uk/

Here are some pictures from Team X-PT who came to the valley on the very chilly morning of January 4th to explore the valley working along the orienteering routes to raise funds for a very special cause........
A quick message from Matty Underwood to the team.....
Well done to everyone who took part in today's orienteering.
It was fantastic to see some of our bootcampers back along with family members. It was also a great pleasure to meet Chris from The Charlie Cookson Foundation who made the trek over from South Shields to take part.
Congratulations to Ruth and the 'Leadgate Massive' who scooped both 1st prizes. Hot on their heels was Rachael and Mel of 'The Brambles'.
A special mention to Nikki who helped with event set up and admin today, much appreciated!
Fab weather, fab day! All for a good cause!

Project briefing and updates
Provisions for orienteering course within the Pont Valley
February 2012-January 2014
Finalisation of the project - March 2014
Due to adverse weather the control points and final checks of the mapped routes had been postponed but are now completed. Members of the PVN have ensured all control points have been erected and recorded for future maintenance and tracking. Maps are accurate with thanks to NATO representatives. Leaflets and publicity posters have been ordered. Final invoices and funding documentation have been collected and events have been arranged to publicise the courses and accessibility. Local schools and residents will be taking part in a day long event to walk and cover the routes and enjoy walking the valley whilst experiencing orienteering with local press cover.
Update for the project - October 2013
Our orienteering mapping and cartography have been planned out by NATO representatives. Due to weather and alternative commitments the Art-E-Factory have been unable to work on this project so the kind work of David Marrs, a dedicated group member, has ensured a local British Elm has been sourced from the St Ives Graveyard to produce the control points. These will be made by David over the next few weeks. Posters, maps and leaflets have been designed and will be printed when all control points are in position. There may be funding available to arrange a publicity event to introduce the courses to the public.
Planning for the project - February 2012
The PVN original Walks and Talks project has continued and proven very successful. Following a number of contacts from walkers and groups that have attended the walks, we identified that there was an opportunity to increase visitors to the valley, particularly new visitors, by adding an orienteering aspect to our already mapped out walks.
Talks were held with the Newcastle And Tyneside Orienteering group (NATO) which have led to a partnership approach to provide a series of formal orienteering routes in the Pont Valley.
A grant application has been successful and we have received £650 for a project totalling £1400. The residual money being met from the PVN reserves.
At this time the initial cartography has been completed by NATO. The dedicated control points are to be made by the Art-E-Factory which is a Social Enterprise that works alongside the Pont Valley Network. All works are to be completed by January 2014. Following this, as part of our partnership, NATO will assist in advertising the presence of the new orienteering routes within the orienteering ‘fraternity, regionally, nationally and internationally.’
